James Anderson retires with victory as England thrash West Indies by an innings

James Anderson concludes his Test career with 704 wickets as England defeats West Indies by an innings and 114 runs in the opening match at Lord’s. Gus Atkinson achieves a remarkable 12-wicket haul on his debut. Anderson will serve as England’s fast bowling mentor for the remainder of the summer, beginning at Trent Bridge next week.

James Anderson received a memorable send-off from Test cricket as England defeated the West Indies by an innings and 114 runs on the third morning of the series opener at Lord’s.

In his 188th and final Test, Anderson took three wickets in the second innings, bringing his career total to 704, placing him third on the all-time list behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708).

The 41-year-old bowled a stunning delivery that angled in before veering away, dismissing Joshua Da Silva for 9, after being honored with a guard of honour from both teams as the West Indies resumed their innings at 79-6, trailing by 171 runs.

Anderson had a chance to secure the final wicket—similar to how Stuart Broad exited the sport in last summer’s final Ashes Test at The Kia Oval—but he missed a catch off West Indies’ Gudakesh Motie during his follow-through.

Gus Atkinson, who took 12 wickets in the match, finished off the West Indies’ innings just over an hour into the day’s play when Jayden Seales was caught out at deep midwicket, leaving the West Indies all out for 136 in 47 overs.
