In the 143 Test matches he has played thus far, Root has amassed 12,027 runs. Sachin, on the other hand, concluded his career with 15,921 runs for India in 200 red-ball matches.
Ricky Ponting, a former captain of Australia, thinks that English star Joe Root can surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s global record for the most runs in Test cricket. Tendulkar, who played for 24 years and made his Test debut for India on November 15, 1989, amassed 15,921 runs in 200 red-ball matches. In contrast, Root has amassed 12,027 runs in 143 games thus far in his career. He is currently 3900 runs short of Tendulkar’s total.
The second-highest run scorer in Tests, Ponting, believes that if Root remains “hungry” and scores at a steady pace for the next four years, he can exceed Tendulkar’s record.
It’s possible that Root will do that. His age is thirty-three. Ponting informed the ICC review that he was “more than 3000 runs behind.”
“It depends on the number of Test matches they play, but if you’re scoring 800–1,000 runs annually and playing 10–14 Test matches annually, that suggests he’s only three or four years away from reaching that point.” Thus, that will bring him to the age of 37,” the renowned Australian remarked.
According to Ponting, Root has the age advantage to go for the Test record, but he will need to maintain his hunger for runs.
It’s highly possible that he could succeed if his hunger persists. He is a person who has improved greatly over the past few years. He’s definitely exceeded the common belief that batters reach their prime in their early 30s. His conversion rates have been the main factor, he stated.
He claimed that Root appeared to have conquered his incapacity to turn half-centuries into significant scoring runs.
“He was struggling to go on and make hundreds of dollars four or five years ago, and he’s gone the other way recently,” Ponting said. He now nearly always goes on to make a massive hundred after reaching fifty. Thus, that’s been his true turning point,” he continued.
Next up for England is a match against Sri Lanka. Root amassed 291 runs in the just finished three-match Test series against the West Indies. On August 21, Manchester will host the first Test of the three-match series at home.
