Sean McColl was born in Vancouver, Canada on September 3, 1987 and spent a significant amount of his twenties living in Chambéry, France. He has been traveling the world for the past few years, both to train and compete. Joe Rockheads, Vertical’Art, Flashed Climbing, Perfect Descent, Adidas, and SCARPA are among his sponsors.

While training with the Canada Youth National Climbing Team, Sean McColl experienced early success: pages 34–38 In his age category, he took home the gold in lead climbing from the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Youth World Championships. He started to place in the top 20 at adult competitions after winning in both the lead and speed climbing categories in 2006. At the Boulder, Colorado, 12th Annual ABS Nationals bouldering competition in February 2011, McColl took first place.

McColl had his best competitive season to date in 2012, placing third in ten major climbing competitions. McColl participated in the IFSC Climbing World Championships in September, finishing fourth in bouldering and second in lead climbing. Despite not winning either event, he amassed enough points to take the lead in the competition as a whole. He traveled to Venezuela for the PanAmerican Championships two months later. He became the first competitor from Canada to place on the podium when he won the lead climbing and bouldering events.

McColl won his first Bouldering World Cup in May 2013 in an event held at Log Dragomer.
