Weston McKennie to join Lionel Messi at Inter Miami? USMNT star lined up for ‘surreal’ €14m transfer from Juventus to MLS

According to reports, Weston McKennie is in line for a “surreal” €14 million (£12 million/$15 million) transfer to Inter Miami, where he will join Lionel Messi.

McKennie, a United States international, never participated in a competitive game in his native country after leaving FC Dallas’ junior system to play for German team Schalke in 2016. Due to his impressive performance in Europe, he was signed by Serie A powerhouse Juventus in 2020.

The Bianconeri are keen to agree to a sale, and McKennie is currently in the last year of his contract. When getting Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, it seemed like a deal was done, but McKennie, a former Leeds loanee, turned down the chance to return to England as part of a partial exchange.

His future is coming under further scrutiny as the 2024–25 season draws near and Juventus looks to make room in the squad and free up cash. JuveLive reports that McKennie might be given the chance to move to the Major League Soccer.

Inter Miami, who already signed Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, is reportedly willing to pay €14 million for McKennie. Although some in Italy have called the offer “surreal,” the 25-year-old Washingtonian has a lot to think about as he contemplates going back to his birthplace.
Due to Lionel Messi’s injury, Inter Miami is once again the favorite to win the League Cup, an accomplishment that is all the more remarkable.

Since the beginning of June, when Messi left for the Copa America and sustained an injury in the championship game, the Argentine international has not touched the ball for the Herons.

Fears are growing that the 37-year-old attacker may miss yet another game for the Florida team, who play the Columbus Crew in League Cup action tonight, as Messi has not been exercising with Inter Miami this week.

The Miami Herald reports that Messi will miss the Herons’ eleventh straight game since he will not be traveling to Columbus for tonight’s crucial Leagues Cup matchup against the Crew.

Inter Miami’s absence of their star attacker for today’s away trip could have a significant impact on whether or not the Florida team advances to the quarterfinals of this summer’s league, as Tata Martino believes the Columbus Crew to be the greatest team in Major League Soccer.

Since Messi hasn’t been seen in pink in more than two months, there are concerns that the striker may be sidelined longer than anticipated if he misses another game.
