During a match broadcast, footage captured the moment when goalkeeper Ramon Souza was struck in the leg by a rubber bullet fired by a Specialized Policing Company officer. The club condemned the officer’s actions as “cowardly,” describing the incident as “regrettable, ridiculous, and appalling.”
In a statement to O Globo, the Military Police of Goiás confirmed that they have initiated a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) through their internal affairs division to investigate the officer’s conduct rigorously.
In a social media post, Grêmio Anápolis characterized the officer’s actions as “horrendous, unbelievable, and criminal,” emphasizing the betrayal of trust by someone entrusted with stadium security and public safety.
“The 10th of July will forever be remembered for this violent, despicable act against one of our players, which will not be forgotten,” the statement read. “GEA [Grêmio Anápolis] informs that legal actions will be pursued to ensure the responsible party is punished and justice is served, so this CRIMINAL act does not go unpunished.”
Ramon Souza received initial medical treatment on the field from the club’s doctor in a mobile intensive care unit. The player received an outpouring of solidarity messages on social media.
“A policeman should be dismissed. We are with you, my goalkeeper,” one user commented. “Stay strong, warrior,” another wrote. “All solidarity to the man who was working and was shot unnecessarily. Don’t let this shake you, brother. God be with you,” a third person affirmed.
In its statement, the Ministry of Sports denounced the officer’s actions as “disproportionate and violent,” stressing that such behavior “is unacceptable and must be vehemently condemned.”
