‘No point playing if not!’ – Target for Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney & Wrexham laid out

According to midfielder James Jones, Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Wrexham are aiming for consecutive promotions.

The Red Dragons have experienced a rapid rise, moving from the National League up through League Two and now returning to the third tier of English football for the first time in two decades

Significant investment has been made to strengthen Phil Parkinson’s squad for the upcoming season, and Jones believes that achieving a place in the Championship should be the ultimate goal. He stated, “Few teams can claim to have secured back-to-back promotions, and I’m not sure if anyone has managed it three times, but that’s definitely our goal. While the general expectation might be to just stabilize and assess our performance, everyone within the team is thinking, ‘Let’s see if we can achieve it.’ There’s no point in competing if you’re not aiming for promotion. We have a winning mentality in the squad, and with that momentum, who knows how far we can go.”

Wrexham have made some changes to their squad after advancing further up the EFL ladder, with Jones acknowledging that player departures are a natural part of ambitious projects. He remarked, “Some players who joined around the same time as me have left, and they will be missed. For instance, Ben Tozer, who signed a day or two after me, was a significant presence at Wrexham throughout my time here. He played a major role in the club’s success and was a big personality. It’s tough to see players like him move on, but that’s just the nature of football, especially at Wrexham, which is unique in many ways.”

With Hollywood co-owners and an award-winning documentary highlighting their journey, Wrexham stands out as a distinct Football League club. They have just completed another pre-season tour in North America and will be ready to start the 2024-25 season when it kicks off on August 10.
