Spinner Jeffrey Vandersay was drafted into Sri Lanka’s ODI team just before the second ODI against India after Wanindu Hasaranga was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Vandersay seized the opportunity by delivering a remarkable performance, taking 6 wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs, which helped the Lankan Lions secure a notable 32-run win over the Indian team.
Vandersay commented on receiving the player of the match award, saying, “The pitch offered some help, so I focused on hitting the right areas and sticking to the basics. This was my first game in a while, so it was important for me to bowl effectively.”
He continued, “There was considerable pressure as I was coming back after a break. I knew I needed to make an impact. While it’s easy to take credit for a performance like this, I must acknowledge the contribution of the batters who set a competitive total. Wanindu Hasaranga is undoubtedly our top spinner, but I have to adapt to the team’s dynamics, selections, and balance. It’s challenging, but I need to keep motivating myself.”
In the second ODI, Vandersay started his spell by dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma on the third ball of the 14th over. The 37-year-old right-handed batter, who was caught out by Pathum Nissanka, was the leading scorer for the top-ranked team, making 64 runs off 44 balls. During his innings, he struck five fours and four sixes.
