Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing LIVE Updates: Court extends deadline, apologises for ‘confusion and inconvenience’

Live updates on the Vinesh Phogat CAS hearing: In response to star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification from the Olympics in Paris, the Court of Arbitration for Sports has postponed rendering a decision. Phogat also asked for a shared silver in her appeal, citing her weight gain following her victory in the Paris semifinal.

Senior counsel Haris Salve decided to represent Vinesh Phogat in the Court of Arbitration for Sports on Thursday, marking a significant advancement in the athlete’s legal battle against her expulsion from the Olympics.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports’ hearing on the matter is now over. The final decision in the case was expected to be announced by the Court of Arbitration on Saturday at 6 p.m. Paris time (i.e., 9:30 p.m. IST). This has now been deferred to August 11.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing: While expressing his condolences to Vinesh, UWW president Lalovic doubted that the outcome would alter because the UWW was merely abiding by the rules.

“I sincerely apologize for what transpired, but athletes are athletes regardless of the size of their nation. The results of this weigh-in were visible to all because it was public. Given what transpired, how can we permit someone to compete? We have no choice but to abide with our regulations,” Lalovic was cited by NDTV.

He also dismissed the idea of a significant revision to the weigh-in regulations. Lalovic continued, “We put that regulation in place out of concern for the athletes’ well-being. It has been required of athletes to weigh regulations in

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing LIVE: American freestyle wrestler Jordan Burroughs has urged the IOC to award Indian rival Vinesh Phogat a silver medal and has shown support for Phogat.

Burroughs, who is regarded as one of the best freestyle wrestlers of all time, has won gold at the World Championship six times in the London 2012 Olympics.

“Perhaps stories like this will wake up the IOC,” he commented on X. It takes MORE than six weight divisions for wrestling! This is no way an athlete should have to spend the night before a gold medal after three hard bouts against elite opponents. The Indian team is in complete desperation to remove Vinesh’s final weight in order to get to today’s final.

Live stream of the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) hearing on wrestler Vinesh Phogat: On Saturday, the CAS extended the time frame for issuing a decision regarding whether or not to grant the wrestler a silver medal.

According to the IOA, “The ad hoc division of CAS has extended time for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee matter to give a decision till 6-00 p.m. on August 13, 2024,” according to ANI.

Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing LIVE: Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra shared two pictures of himself with the wrestler and a heartfelt statement on social media platform X. “You are a fighter—on and off the mat,” he wrote. We are learning from you how to keep fighting within ourselves even when a loss is really difficult. You exemplify the real warrior spirit.”

“Not all victories look alike,” he continued. Some become dazzling keepsakes in a cabinet, but the ones that mean more become part of our children’s memories. And every young person in this nation will be aware of your champion status. Every young person will aspire to have your level of resilience as they navigate life.

During the live Vinesh Phogat CAS hearing, American freestyle wrestler and six-time gold medallist in the World Championship Jordan Burroughs wrote on X, “Give Vinesh silver.”

Burroughs is regarded as one of the all-time best freestyle wrestlers, along with another Olympic gold medallist, from London 2012.

Commenting on the issue of weight loss, he stated, “Perhaps news like this will alert the IOC. It takes MORE than six weight divisions for wrestling! This is no way an athlete should have to spend the night before a gold medal after three hard bouts against elite opponents. The Indian team is in complete desperation to remove Vinesh’s final weight in order to get to today’s final.

For the first time in nearly three weeks, D Gukesh acted like the 18-year-old he is. Overcome by the gravity of the situation, the teenager from Chennai began to sob at the chessboard.
