Paris Olympics: USA pip China to top medal tally, Pakistan finish above India at 62nd

There were many exciting competitions and special experiences during the Paris Olympics. Highlights included China’s outstanding performance in their major sports, Japan’s remarkable rise, and the USA’s late charge to the top of the medal standings.
In a thrilling finish to the Games, the United States of America (USA) edged over China to take the top spot on the medal table at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The USA and China were embroiled in a close battle, with China ahead by one gold medal until the final match, the women’s basketball final. The USA defeated France 67-66 in a thrilling game to maintain their record of winning the most medals at the Olympics for four years running.

The USA’s Domination in Field and Track
The USA’s dominance in track and field events, where they took home an incredible 14 gold medals along with 11 silver and 9 bronze, enhanced their total result.

The Americans were as successful in swimming, where they finished with 28 medals total—eight of them gold. After everything was said and done, the United States of America had 126 medals in total—40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze.

China’s impressive pool performance
Even though they came in second, China performed admirably in their traditionally strong sports, especially weightlifting, diving, and swimming. They tied the United States for the most gold medals with 91 altogether, including 40 gold ones, although they were shy of the Americans’ total medal haul. However, China’s efforts fell short of what the USA did broad success across multiple disciplines.

Japan exceeds forecasts

With 45 medals, including 20 gold, Japan finished third in the medal table, exceeding expectations. Pre-Olympic forecasts had indicated that Japan would win barely half as many gold medals as they had at the Tokyo Olympics, therefore this outcome shocked everyone.

Japan’s impressive performance demonstrates their increasing ability in a variety of sports on the global arena.

Australia and Great Britain are among the top finishers.
With 14 gold medals, Great Britain, which was expected to finish in the top three, came in seventh. Australia, on the other hand, had a great campaign and placed fourth with 18 gold medals. With 16 gold medals, the host country, France, completed the top five, putting up a great performance at home.

Pakistan surpasses India with 62nd place, finishing 71st overall.
India came in 71st place with six medals at the Paris Olympics, five of which were bronze and one silver. But depending on how wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification in the women’s 50kg wrestling final plays out, India’s ultimate medal total may vary. Phogat’s decision to disqualify himself stemmed from his 100 grams of excess weight at the weigh-in she has challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Pakistan secured the 62nd rank on the medal table, finishing ahead of India, which is a noteworthy feat. After 44 years, Pakistan rejoiced when Arshad Nadeem emerged victorious in the men’s javelin final, ushering in a great era for the country.

For the first time in nearly three weeks, D Gukesh acted like the 18-year-old he is. Overcome by the gravity of the situation, the teenager from Chennai began to sob at the chessboard.
